Mums DO know best.... by Paulette
I guess I was about 43/44 when my mood swings started. I’d be on a happy high one day and crying my eyes out the next. I’d been through a divorce and was in a very unstable relationship, trying to balance work and children so I put it all down to life pressures.
It all came to a head when I had a massive row with my mum and I refused to speak to her for three long months……..the reason behind the row was that she had dared to suggest I was going through the menopause. I thought that she was being absolutely ridiculous, I was much too young for that!!!
This was a subject that nobody spoke about and to be honest I was scared! I knew absolutely nothing about the menopause and didn’t understand the changes my body was going through. My periods were erratic, my weight was going up despite putting myself through various fad diets, I was going to the gym and exercising and getting angry because my body wasn’t toning up as I felt it should. All in all it was a very miserable time.
So, I took my mums advice and went to see a female doctor (it wasn’t something I wanted to discuss with any male!). I then bought some flowers and took myself up to see my mum for a very long chat and a big hug.
I declined the offer of HRT from my doctor as I am a great believer in natural remedies and only take medication if I absolutely must. From there started my journey into the world of aromatherapy and the use of natural ingredients.
I bought my first oil diffuser and some aromatherapy oils (lavender was my favourite) and the effect was incredible. I started using these in the evening when I got home from work and going for short walks to breathe in some fresh air and appreciate the beauty of nature. At the time there wasn’t much in the way of help or advice for women and the menopause, so I just bumbled along using my own version of self-help.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that some mums do know best and although you may not always agree and not everyone is the same, it never hurts to listen to their advice.
Now I’m part of the Shhh…Menopause Wellness team and have joined a group of women who are, have and will go through this. Its time for us ladies to talk about this ‘forbidden’ subject and to support each other through it.
Through our united experiences we can offer advice and a shoulder to cry on when you need one. With our products we aim to help you restore the calmness in your life.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions or simply just tell us what’s on your mind. We are here to listen.
What have you got to lose??? We've got your back.
